Educational psychologist shares top tips for matric exam success: ‘Sleep, structure and self-discipline’

Professor Kobus Maree says emotional balance and routine are as vital as studying.

As matric final exams get underway this week, educational psychologist Professor Kobus Maree is urging pupils to focus not only on academics but emotional resilience and self-care as well.

Maree says the final stretch of the school year is ‘one of the most stressful periods in a young person’s life’ and that unmanaged stress can seriously affect performance and wellbeing.

He advises matrics to approach exams with structure, balance, and a positive mindset, noting that self-compassion and good habits can help them maintain motivation while reducing anxiety.

“Be kind to yourself, acknowledge your effort. Self-compassion keeps motivation high and anxiety low. If you’re inclined to become stressed, go and consult someone; there is a cure for that. Don’t suffer in silence.”

Maree also encourages parents and guardians to provide structure and emotional support (rather than pressure) as their children navigate the exams.
